It's that time of year again. The leaves on the trees are changing colors, school is in full session and it's just plain cold. But before you go and retire your spring and summer wardrobe into storage, save some money and incorporate it into your fall looks! Over the past few years layering has become extremely popular in fashion, particularly among teens and young adults. As a result, there is no reason that your seasonal wardrobes cannot intermix. More clothes, more styles, more possible outfits. Here are a few basic ways to expand your outfit selection from your already existing wardrobe.
1) The Summer Dress: Last season was all about the summer dress. Light, flowing material that hugs all the right curves and lies gracefully over that midriff area every woman loves to hide. Why not make it work in the fall too? Layering summer dresses over tights or leggings, with either flats, boots, or heels (depending on the style of the dress) can make the dress far more versatile. Pair with a jean or tan leather jacket to make the dress appear more fall-friendly. While you're at it, get out those old turtlenecks you have lying around and layer them under your dress for a fun, flirty, but completely fall look.
2) The Tank-Top: This piece of clothing is a staple in any girl's wardrobe. It's becoming more versatile than ever as it transcends into fall and winter fashions. The most obvious use of the tank-top is layering under full sleeve shirts with scoop or v necks. Pairing a basic white, grey or black full sleeve shirt with a brightly colored tank-top can add extra flair to a fairly common outfit. Or be bold and pair two colored tops together...just be careful that the mix works! You'll be better off using wife-beaters or widely strapped tank-tops that are longer, which work better than short spaghetti strap style that tends to bunch up under the long sleeve shirt. Another idea is to pair a tank-top with a cropped jacket or a shrug. Pairing these two pieces with a necklace or scarf and a cute pair of shoes will certainly add an extra something to your outfit as well as make good use of summer clothing.
3) Open Toe Shoes: There's nothing worse than having to retire your favorite pair of shoes for an entire season, but clearly no one likes to let their toes freeze! So take out our favorite pair of peep toed shoes and a pair of dark tights and wear them all season long. Particularly pairing dark tights with black or navy peep toed shoes can add a touch of femininity and class, especially when paired with a fall dress or a skirt and sweater. 4) Dressy Shorts Generally, shorts are viewed as the staple piece of any summer wardrobe, but rarely ever make and appearance in the fall and winter months. However, the right shorts paired with tights can definitely be worn throughout the fall season. This look works best when paired with heels or flats. But be careful, not every pair of dressy shorts works for this look, and it'll take a bit of mixing and matching to find an outfit that truly works.
So, let's recap. Buy a pair of tights or leggings (black and grey are the most versatile, although brown, if worn well, can also be quite useful). Purchase a cropped jacket. And then simply make use of your summer dresses, tank tops, and open toed shoes to completely revamp your already existing wardrobe to suit the fall and winter seasons. Have fun making new outfits and stay warm and stylish, without having to shell out a lot of money for new fall clothes.
